MANILA, Philippines — Police authorities have dismantled a large illegal “e‑sabong” operation in Manila, arresting 174 individuals linked to an online cockfighting gambling ring that reportedly staged hundreds of matches daily.
On Thursday, law enforcement officers raided a facility functioning as a hub for e‑sabong activities, where around 500 cockfights were believed to be conducted each day. The operation targeted organizers, bettors, and other personnel involved in running and promoting the illicit gambling network.
Police said the crackdown is part of an intensified campaign to curb illegal online gambling activities that have proliferated despite government efforts to regulate and restrict such operations. Online cockfighting—commonly known as e‑sabong—has been a controversial issue in the country due to its unregulated nature and links to underground betting networks.
Authorities continue to investigate the extent of the operation, including how the illegal gaming ring was coordinated and whether other regions were involved. Further charges are expected as the case progresses.
The PNP’s move aligns with broader law enforcement campaigns against illegal gambling and other criminal activities, with police also warning of potential rises in street crime amid economic pressures on communities.
Police urge the public to report suspicious online gambling operations and illegal gaming sites to help authorities uphold public safety and legal compliance.
