Island-tourism hotspot Siargao is charting a new course. Once known primarily for surfing at Cloud 9, Siargao Island is now doubling down on infrastructure and strategic planning—efforts many see as a blueprint for other Philippine islands.
Major upgrades are already underway:
- The expansion of Sayak Airport in Del Carmen will increase its capacity and improve connectivity, making the island more accessible to foreign and domestic tourists alike.
- A formal tourism master plan—developed by the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (TIEZA)—sets out eight distinct tourism management zones, endorsing clustered development of surf, nature, eco-adventure and game-fishing destinations.
- Community-driven sustainability projects are being integrated into the tourism ecosystem—covering waste management, mangrove restoration and locally-owned businesses. These initiatives aim to ensure that growth benefits residents and preserves Siargao’s natural charm.
In sum, Siargao is more than wave-riding and white sand—it’s becoming a case study in how to combine infrastructure investment, destination management and community inclusion to sustain island tourism.
