Over 100 Dead as Typhoon Tino Devastates Central Philippines, Massive Recovery Effort Underway

The death toll from Typhoon Tino has surpassed 100 in the Philippines, as rescue teams and stranded communities begin to pick up the pieces after the storm’s destructive passage.

The central Visayas region, particularly the province of Cebu, is the worst affected, where flooding and landslides have submerged neighborhoods, isolated villages and overwhelmed local emergency services.

According to local officials:

  • In Cebu alone, some municipalities reported dozens of deaths, with many people still missing and unaccounted for.
  • In neighbouring islands such as Negros Island, heavy rains triggered volcanic mudflows and posed additional hazards, contributing to the mounting casualty figure.
  • Emergency shelter centres are filled, many roads are impassable, and communication remains disrupted in several barangays.

In response, local and national authorities have declared states of calamity in multiple provinces to speed up relief efforts and access emergency funds.
