Authorities at the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) have apprehended a Ugandan national for allegedly smuggling methamphetamine-hydrochloride (commonly called “shabu”) valued at more than ₱42 million into the Philippines.
The suspect was intercepted at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) after customs and airport interdiction units flagged his checked luggage. Upon physical examination and x-ray screening, agents uncovered the illegal substance concealed inside the baggage.
Following proper inventory, the contraband and the suspect were turned over to PDEA for in-depth investigation and charges under the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002 (RA 9165) and the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act (RA 10863).
This case underscores the continued vigilance of airport and customs authorities in combating international drug-smuggling syndicates using Manila’s entry points.
In the coming days, investigators will examine the suspect’s flight and baggage history, possible networks of origin, and whether he was acting as a courier or part of a broader scheme.
