Filipino world champion Melvin Jerusalem is taking the spotlight in a big way — and he’s fully aware of the extra weight (both literal and symbolic) coming with it.
On October 29th, at the historic Thrilla in Manila 50th-anniversary fight night, Jerusalem will defend his World Boxing Council (WBC) mini-flyweight title at the same venue where the classic bout between Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier took place.
At the official weigh-in, Jerusalem tipped the scales at 104.8 lbs — the same as his challenger, South Africa’s Siyakholwa Kuse.
He acknowledged the occasion openly: the anniversary of the original Thrilla in Manila elevates more than just the fight card — it adds a layer of expectation. “Sobrang excited ako… yung crowd sa atin. Ibang-iba pa rin yung sariling atin ang suporta,” he said.
Despite the pressure, Jerusalem appears calm and focused. He recognises what is at stake — his title, the home crowd, and honouring the legacy of that famed fight night four decades ago — and he’s using it as motivation rather than letting it weigh him down.
