The Land Transportation Office (LTO) has found the driver responsible for the deadly May 4 crash at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 1 guilty of reckless driving. He has been fined P2,000 and had his driver’s license revoked for four years—the maximum penalty allowed by law for the offense.
LTO chief Vigor Mendoza II cited Joint Administrative Order 2014-01, which defines reckless driving as any act that endangers life, property, or the rights of others. The driver, a 47-year-old man from Batangas, failed to submit a defense or explanation.
The crash killed two people and injured several more when an SUV rammed into the departure area. The driver was arrested on-site but later released on P100,000 bail. Alcohol and drug tests came back negative.
Aside from administrative penalties, he is also facing criminal charges for reckless imprudence resulting in homicide, multiple injuries, and property damage.
Following the incident, airport operator New NAIA Infra Corp. (NNIC) announced a redesign of drop-off areas and a security audit of all protective bollards to prevent similar tragedies.
