Dennis Padilla Defends Himself Against ‘Toxic Dad’ Claims After Claudia’s Wedding

MANILA — Actor-comedian Dennis Padilla has fired back at critics calling him a “toxic” and “narcissistic” father, following his emotional outburst over how he was treated at his daughter Claudia Barretto’s wedding.

In a phone interview with entertainment host Ogie Diaz on April 9, Padilla expressed his heartbreak, questioning the public narrative against him.
“Ayoko na. Sabi nila, ako ‘yung toxic. Talaga ba? A father who longs for his children’s love—do you call that toxic?” he said, referring to how he felt more like a guest than the father of the bride.

Padilla shared his frustration over not being allowed to walk Claudia down the aisle—an honor that went to his ex-wife Marjorie Barretto. He also claimed he wasn’t given a proper seat at the ceremony and was largely sidelined during the celebration.

The actor stressed that he had made numerous attempts to reconcile with his children—Julia, Claudia, and Leon—both privately and publicly, including sending them holiday greetings and trying to bond with their partners.

Despite this, public reaction has largely leaned toward the Barretto siblings. Netizens criticized Padilla for centering himself during a significant family event and accused him of making the moment about his pain rather than his daughter’s joy.

One user noted, “Take accountability. A parent’s maturity is not the child’s burden.” Another pointed out, “He should be thankful he was invited despite their strained relationship.”

Julia, Claudia, Leon, and their mother Marjorie have remained silent on the issue, while their sister Dani Barretto voiced support for the newlyweds, telling Claudia and Basti not to let “anyone dim your light.”
