Senate President Francis “Chiz” Escudero announced that the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte is expected to conclude by October 2025, following a two- to three-month trial timeline.
Escudero outlined the Senate’s schedule, starting with the formal convening of the impeachment court on June 2, followed by the issuance of summons on June 4, and a potential trial start on July 29 or 30.
Despite calls for a special session, Escudero rejected the idea, stating that impeachment is not urgent legislation. He also confirmed that he has no interest in assuming the vice presidency if Duterte is convicted.
The House of Representatives impeached Duterte on February 5, but the Senate adjourned without addressing the case. Meanwhile, Duterte has filed a Supreme Court petition challenging the impeachment’s validity, while other legal groups seek to either stop or expedite the trial.
The trial is set to be one of the most high-profile political events of the year.
