Cyclist Caught Counterflowing on NLEX Near Philippine Arena

A cyclist was caught counterflowing on the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) northbound near the Philippine Arena in Bulacan on Tuesday, according to a report aired on Friday.

Incident Details

Dashcam footage showed the man biking alongside the center island as an NLEX patrol officer chased him down. Despite multiple warnings to stop, the cyclist continued pedaling until he was eventually halted and escorted to a patrol car.

Communication Challenges

Robin Ignacio, head of the NLEX Traffic Operations Department, noted that communication with the cyclist was difficult:
“He didn’t explain much, just thanked us. We couldn’t talk to him properly.”

Misunderstanding Leads to Counterflow

Ignacio shared that the cyclist appeared lost and unaware that he was on an expressway, saying:
“It seems someone directed him there. He looked confused, not realizing it was an expressway.”

Bikes are prohibited on expressways, and NLEX management confirmed that proper signage is in place to prevent such incidents.

The video of the cyclist has garnered over 500,000 views on social media, sparking discussions about safety, awareness, and proper road use.
