Olympics bronze medalist Nesthy Petecio expressed her gratitude and determination during an ambush interview at the House of Representatives on Wednesday. Petecio, along with fellow bronze medalist Aira Villegas, hopes that boxing will continue to be included in the 2028 LA Olympics despite concerns about its potential exclusion.
Gratitude and Determination
“Walang hinto hanggat walang ginto,” said Petecio, thanking supporters and emphasizing her continued drive for gold. She acknowledged the increased attention towards sports in the Philippines and expressed hope that it would inspire more athletes to persevere.
Hopes for Boxing’s Inclusion in 2028 Olympics
Petecio is optimistic that Team USA, which includes several boxers, will advocate for the sport’s inclusion in the next Olympics. She remains unperturbed by reports about boxing’s potential exclusion.
Villegas echoed this sentiment, expressing her strong desire to compete in the next Olympics. She shared her struggles and triumphs as a boxer, highlighting the emotional and physical challenges she has faced since starting boxing at the age of 9, taught by her brother.
Overcoming Challenges
Villegas described the hardships of being away from family and dealing with self-doubt. She emphasized the importance of reflecting on one’s beginnings and purpose to overcome these challenges. “Normal pong mahirapan as an athlete tapos sumuko. Ako, naranasan ko rin lalo na sa self-doubt tapos yung mga naririnig mo sa paligid mo… Bumalik ka po kung saan lahat nag-umpisa.”
Recommendations for Government Support
When asked about government support, Villegas suggested the creation of training facilities like gyms, prioritizing athletes’ nutritional needs, and providing uniforms and gear. The House of Representatives plans to review existing laws to enhance support for Filipino athletes.
