EJ Obiena Eyes Keeping World No. 2 Ranking for the Rest of 2024

Filipino Olympic pole-vaulter EJ Obiena is determined to maintain his world No. 2 ranking as he competes in various sports events throughout the remainder of 2024.

Competitive Drive

Despite narrowly missing out on a medal at the recently concluded Paris Olympics, where he placed 4th behind Olympic gold medalist and world record holder Mondo Duplantis, Sam Kendricks of the US, and Emmanouil Karalis of Greece, Obiena remains focused on his goals.

“I’m very grateful to be in such a position as myself. I’ll keep doing my best. The season’s not over. There are still a few competitions for me to take part in this year, and hopefully, I’ll be able to retain my world ranking,” Obiena stated during his visit to the House of Representatives this morning.

Gratitude and Continued Support

Obiena expressed his gratitude to everyone who supported and prayed for him during the Paris Olympics.

“I want to thank them. I know napuyat sila. I just wanna say thank you so much to everyone,” he said, acknowledging the late nights his supporters endured.

Upcoming Competitions and Events

Obiena, who was ranked No. 2 before the Paris Games, is set to participate in more competitions this year to solidify his ranking and possibly improve his standings. He will also host a “world-class” pole vault meet in the Philippines on September 20, where Paris finalists are expected to join.
