Heatwave Alert: Nine Areas in the Philippines Brace for Dangerous Heat Levels

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has issued a warning for a “danger” level heat index in nine regions, signaling potentially perilous temperatures. The forecast indicates that these areas could experience heat indices soaring to as high as 46 degrees Celsius, posing serious health risks.

The affected areas include Daet in Camarines Norte, hitting the peak with a predicted heat index of 46°C, followed closely by Cotabato City in Maguindanao and several locations in Cagayan, Occidental Mindoro, Palawan, Camarines Sur, and Capiz, all experiencing indices above the 42°C mark. Such extreme heat conditions heighten the likelihood of heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and even heat stroke, especially with prolonged exposure.

Symptoms to watch for range from heavy sweating and dizziness to more severe conditions like fainting and rapid pulse, necessitating immediate medical attention. The Department of Health (DOH) has outlined first aid measures, including moving to cooler areas, applying cold compresses, and ensuring gradual hydration.

In response to the scorching forecast, certain localities have preemptively suspended face-to-face classes to safeguard students’ well-being. Additionally, the DOH advises the public to minimize outdoor activities, stay hydrated, and dress appropriately to mitigate heat-related health risks.

This announcement comes amidst the ongoing El Niño phenomenon, which exacerbates the country’s warm and dry conditions, underscoring the importance of preparedness and precaution during this intense heatwave period.
