Filipino Seafarer Airlifted to Safety Off Saipan by US Coast Guard and Navy

In a collaborative rescue operation off the coast of Saipan, a Filipino seafarer was saved early this month by the US Coast Guard and Navy. The crew member, suffering from stroke-like symptoms, was aboard the vessel Antwerpen Express when the distress call was made. Positioned 550 nautical miles northeast of Saipan, the call prompted an immediate response.

The 37-year-old mariner was airlifted by a Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 25 MH-60S Knighthawk helicopter and subsequently received medical attention from Guam Fire Rescue upon arrival at Naval Hospital Guam. He was then transferred to Guam Memorial Hospital, where he remains in stable condition under the care of medical professionals.

Commander Neil Toohey of the US Navy’s Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 25, known for conducting numerous medical evacuations and search and rescue missions, expressed pride in their capability to assist individuals in distress. “Today’s operation is a testament to our team’s dedication and expertise,” he stated, emphasizing the importance of their mission in aiding the people of Guam and navigating mariners.

The Antwerpen Express, a Germany-flagged container ship stretching 1,202 feet, became the scene for this critical operation. This incident highlights the significant risks faced by the global shipping industry’s workforce, which includes a substantial number of Filipino seafarers among its ranks. The Philippines is a major contributor to the international maritime labor force, emphasizing the importance of such successful rescue operations in safeguarding the well-being of these essential workers.
