PNP Enhances Bomb Disposal Capabilities with US-Donated Robots

The Philippine National Police (PNP) has significantly boosted its bomb disposal capabilities by acquiring six state-of-the-art bomb removal automated vehicle (BRAVE) robots from the United States Anti-Terrorism Assistance (ATA). The handover ceremony, which took place at Camp Bagong Diwa in Taguig City on February 12, 2024, saw these robots, valued at P20 million each, being received by the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO).

The occasion also marked the groundbreaking of the new Explosive Ordnance Disposal/K9 Group Headquarters, symbolizing a commitment to enhancing the infrastructure necessary for effective law enforcement operations. PNP Chief Police General Benjamin Acorda Jr. emphasized the importance of collaboration, innovation, and dedication to public service during the ceremony. He highlighted how the integration of the BRAVE robots and the establishment of the EOD/K9 Group Headquarters reflect the nation’s resolve to maintain a leading edge in technology and operational readiness.

This advancement comes at a critical time, as the same day witnessed bomb threats across various government agencies, local governments, and schools nationwide. The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) was among those affected, although the threat was later debunked as a hoax after a police investigation. The Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC) traced the origin of the bomb threat emails to Japan and is coordinating with the Japanese government for further investigation.

The acquisition of the BRAVE robots is a significant step forward in the PNP’s ongoing efforts to safeguard public safety and counter terrorism with cutting-edge technology.
