Young Filipino Innovator Crafts Tidal Turbine, Eyes Sustainable Energy Future

In a remarkable display of ingenuity and dedication to sustainable energy, a 22-year-old Filipino, Patrick De Guzman, has engineered a prototype of a tidal turbine, aptly named the Marissa Turbine. This groundbreaking project, highlighted in Martin Javier’s Game Changer report on “24 Oras,” seeks to harness the immense power of ocean waves to generate electricity, potentially revolutionizing energy production in the Philippines, an archipelago rich in tidal waves, rivers, and canals.

The turbine, a tribute to De Guzman’s late mother, Marissa, carries a profound personal and symbolic significance. “Kung mapapansin natin ang Philippines, archipelago tayo eh, ang dami nating tidal waves, rivers, canals,” he remarked, emphasizing the abundance of water bodies in the Philippines that can be tapped for electricity production. The name ‘Marissa’ resonates with this vision, signifying “of the sea” in Latin.

De Guzman’s journey toward this innovative venture began at the tender age of 16, when the concept of the tidal turbine first took root in his mind. In 2022, his vision materialized into a tangible prototype, thanks to the collaborative efforts of an international non-government organization, the Department of Science and Technology, Ateneo de Manila University, and De La Salle University.

The Marissa Turbine holds promising potential for sustainable energy solutions, with its ability to charge a battery in 10 hours, sufficient to meet the daily electricity needs of a typical Filipino household. De Guzman envisions a future where his turbine is not only modular but also easily accessible and deployable, signifying a significant leap towards environmentally friendly and cost-effective energy sources.

As of the latest reports, the Department of Energy in the Philippines has recognized the immense potential of ocean energy, awarding nine ocean energy projects that are currently in the pre-development stage. The advent of the Marissa Turbine positions the Philippines at the forefront of embracing renewable energy sources, marking a pivotal shift towards a greener and more sustainable energy landscape.

Patrick De Guzman’s pioneering work encapsulates the innovative spirit and commitment to environmental stewardship, setting an inspiring precedent for future generations to harness the power of nature in sustainable and transformative ways.
