‘I Failed’: Coach Tab Baldwin Breaks Silence on Ateneo Basketball Training Tragedy

MANILA, Philippines — Carrying an immense emotional weight, Ateneo Blue Eagles head coach Tab Baldwin has broken his silence following a team-building tragedy that has shocked the national sports community. Baldwin issued a deeply emotional public apology, openly declaring that he had failed as a leader, coach, and friend following the drowning deaths of two of his players.

The pre-recorded video statement, uploaded by the Ateneo de Manila University, marks Baldwin’s first public remarks since the devastating incident took place earlier this week in Dipaculao, Aurora.

The tragedy unfolded on Monday, June 8, 2026, during what was intended to be a conditioning and team-building exercise along the coast of Aurora. Baldwin recounted the exact moment the situation spiraled out of control:

routine training run in what was initially believed to be stable, • caught the team off-guard as they suddenly realized the
shallow coastal waters. • players were trapped in highly dangerous depths.

Visibly shaken and tearful in the eight-minute address, the decorated four-time UAAP champion coach bypassed technical or legal defenses, choosing instead to address the grieving families directly:

“As a coach, I’m entrusted by you, the parents and the families, with first and foremost, their well-being. In this, I feel I’ve failed. I’m sorry, to the depth of my being, I’m sorry… I failed as a leader. I felt I had failed as a coach. I certainly felt like I had failed as a friend to Divine and Rene. When later, I faced the team to try to be a leader in that moment, I felt that I failed them, too.”

The longtime coach expressed profound grief over the permanent nature of the loss, acknowledging that the families would never again be able to hold or speak to their sons. “Yes, as a coach, I lost my boys too,” Baldwin added.

The public apology comes amid mounting pressure and swift legal intervention from state agencies attempting to map out accountability for the tragic training accident:

  • Administrative Leaves: Ateneo President Roberto Yap confirmed that Coach Tab Baldwin and Team Manager Epok Quimpo have voluntarily gone on leave. This measure ensures the total independence and fairness of the university’s internal fact-finding inquiry.
  • DILG and Subpoenas: The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) announced that the PNP-Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (PNP-CIDG) has officially subpoenaed all coaches and players present at the beach resort.
  • Anti-Hazing Compliance Review: Investigators are examining the conditioning routine to ensure no violations of Republic Act No. 11053 (The Anti-Hazing Act of 2018) occurred, though Ateneo heavily clarified that no physical weights of any kind were utilized during the drill.

As the Ateneo community gathers for vigils, former Blue Eagles are calling for the public to show compassion toward the surviving players, many of whom are currently processing deep psychological trauma from witnessing the event.

The tragedy has brought collegiate athletic conditioning protocols under intense national scrutiny, raising questions about safety guidelines during off-campus, out-of-town sports activities.
