The Yulo name continues to resonate in the world of international gymnastics as Karl Eldrew Yulo—the younger brother of world champion Carlos Yulo—successfully advanced to the finals of the men’s floor exercise at the 2026 FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Cup in Cairo, Egypt.
The 18-year-old prodigy showcased the trademark precision and explosive power of the Yulo lineage, securing his spot among the top eight finalists in a field of elite international competitors. His performance marks a significant milestone in his transition to the senior ranks, proving that he is a formidable contender in his own right on the road to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
Competing at the Cairo International Stadium, Eldrew executed a high-difficulty routine characterized by clean landings and sophisticated tumbling passes. He tallied a score of 14.266, placing him comfortably in the upper tier of the qualification rankings.
“I felt a bit nervous because it’s my first major World Cup as a senior, but I just focused on my form and my breathing,” Eldrew shared via a social media update. His execution score was particularly high, reflecting the rigorous technical training he has undergone under the guidance of the Gymnastics Association of the Philippines (GAP).
While Eldrew has long been in the shadow of his multi-titled older brother, his performance in Cairo signals a “coming out party” for the younger Yulo. He is currently competing in multiple apparatuses, including the vault—an event where he previously dominated the junior Asian championships.
GAP President Cynthia Carrion expressed high hopes for the young gymnast, noting that Eldrew’s trajectory mirrors the early success of Carlos. “He has the same hunger and the same discipline. We are seeing the next generation of Philippine gymnastics excellence taking shape right before our eyes,” Carrion stated.
The floor exercise finals, scheduled for later this week, will see Eldrew facing off against seasoned gymnasts from traditional powerhouses like Japan, China, and Great Britain. To secure a medal, analysts suggest he may need to slightly increase his Difficulty (D-score) while maintaining the near-perfect Execution (E-score) he displayed in the qualifiers.
Eldrew is also set to compete in the vault qualifications, where he is expected to be a top-three contender given his recent success in regional competitions.
For the Philippines, Eldrew’s success provides a much-needed boost to the national sports narrative during the Lenten break. His journey is part of a broader “Olympic Cycle” strategy by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) to qualify more athletes for the next Summer Games.
As the finals approach, the Filipino sporting community is rallying behind the “Little Yulo,” eager to see if he can bring home a gold medal from the Egyptian capital and further cement the family’s legacy as the “First Family” of Philippine gymnastics.
