LUCENA CITY, Philippines — Quezon Governor Angelina “Helen” Tan has directed all local government units (LGUs) across the province to intensify their monitoring of basic commodities following reports of unscrupulous traders taking advantage of recent economic volatility. The governor’s call aims to protect residents from artificial price hikes and ensure that essential goods remain affordable and accessible.
The directive comes in response to mounting complaints from consumers regarding the rising costs of food, fuel, and other household necessities. Governor Tan emphasized that while global market forces are driving some price increases, there is no room for “profiteering” or the “hoarding” of supplies at the expense of the public.
“We are calling on our mayors and local price coordinating councils to be proactive,” Governor Tan said in a statement. “We must ensure that the Suggested Retail Price (SRP) is being followed in our public markets and grocery stores. Our goal is to prevent any undue burden on our families, especially those who are already struggling with the increased cost of living.”
The provincial government is coordinating with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) to conduct regular inspections and verify the stock levels of key distributors. LGUs have been tasked with reporting any retailers found to be significantly deviating from the SRP or those suspected of withholding goods to drive up prices.
Beyond enforcement, the governor also encouraged the expansion of “Kadiwa” centers and local farmers’ markets. These initiatives allow residents to purchase fresh produce and basic goods directly from sources at lower prices, bypassing middle-men who may contribute to higher retail costs.
Provincial officials warned that business owners caught engaging in illegal price manipulation face the cancellation of their business permits and potential legal action under the Price Act. Residents are encouraged to stay vigilant and report suspicious pricing activity to their respective municipal or city halls.
