Arrests Await Gas Station Execs Caught Hoarding Amid Oil Price Spike

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police (PNP) issued a stern warning on Monday, March 9, 2026, that gas station managers and personnel found to be illegally withholding fuel supply will face immediate arrest. The crackdown comes as the country anticipates a massive spike in pump prices—estimated at ₱20 for diesel and ₱10 for gasoline—following the outbreak of war in the Middle East.

PNP Chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. announced that intelligence units have been deployed to monitor warehouses and retail stations for possible hoarding.

  • Special Task Forces: The Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG), the Maritime Group, and the Highway Patrol Group (HPG) have been specifically tasked with tracking down illegal stock-piling.
  • Coordination: The PNP is working closely with the Department of Energy (DOE), the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), and local government units to ensure compliance with pricing directives.
  • Motorist Complaints: A coordination protocol has been established to respond to complaints from motorists regarding unfair or unreasonable pricing, particularly in provincial areas.

The price surge is a reaction to the escalating conflict that began in late February 2026.

  • The Conflict: After U.S. and Israeli missile attacks on Iran—which resulted in the death of Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei—Iran retaliated by targeting U.S. bases and seizing control of the Strait of Hormuz.
  • Economic Fallout: The blockade of this vital waterway has sent global oil prices soaring, leading to the largest single-week price hike forecast for the Philippines in years.

The DOE has already flagged several stations for raising prices ahead of the traditional Tuesday implementation. The agency reiterated that retailers must wait for the official adjustment period and warned that “illegal withholding of supply to spike prices” is a criminal act during this period of national economic concern.
