Naga Mayor Leni Robredo Thanks President Marcos for P500-M Coliseum Funding

NAGA CITY, Philippines — Former Vice President and current Naga City Mayor Leni Robredo expressed her gratitude to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. for the P500-million allocation to rehabilitate the Jesse M. Robredo Coliseum (JMRC).

The turnover of the special allotment release order (SARO) took place on February 21, 2026, following a meeting between the two former political rivals that they both characterized as “non-political.”

Project Details & Use of Funds:

  • Modernization & Retrofitting: The P500 million will be used for structural strengthening, roofing upgrades, and drainage system improvements to prevent flooding.
  • Community Features: A key addition is a community kitchen capable of feeding thousands during disasters, along with modernized sanitation and dedicated medical response areas.
  • Secondary Projects: Robredo noted that the funding allows the city to redirect other local resources to rehabilitate the Metro Naga Sports Complex and the Naga City Civic Center, which have lacked maintenance funds for years.
  • Symbolic Value: Built in 2010 and later named after the late DILG Secretary Jesse Robredo, the 15,000-capacity coliseum serves as the “Big Dome of the South” and a critical evacuation center during major typhoons.

Political Implications

While the meeting sparked speculation about a possible alliance for the 2028 elections—especially following Vice President Sara Duterte’s early announcement of her presidential bid—both Marcos and Robredo downplayed the optics. Robredo stated that discussing 2028 now would be a “disservice” to her current constituents, while Marcos emphasized that his administration still has significant work to do in its final two years.

Robredo also acknowledged Senator Kiko Pangilinan for his role in securing the assistance and Executive Secretary Ralph Recto for facilitating the request.
