BRP Miguel Malvar Embarks on Historic First Mission to India for IFR and MILAN 2026

VISAKHAPATNAM, India — The Philippine Navy’s newest and most advanced guided-missile frigate, BRP Miguel Malvar (FFG-06), has arrived in India to participate in the 3rd International Fleet Review (IFR) and the Multilateral Naval Exercise (MILAN) 2026.

The deployment, which began on February 5, 2026, marks a “historic milestone” as the first time the Philippine Navy has participated in a naval exercise hosted by India, and the inaugural foreign mission for the BRP Miguel Malvar.

Mission Highlights:

  • Journey to India: The frigate and its 115-man contingent (Naval Task Group 80.5) sailed approximately 2,914 nautical miles (5,397 km) across the Indian Ocean, arriving at the strategic port of Visakhapatnam on February 14, 2026.
  • International Fleet Review (IFR 2026): Held on February 18, the event featured Indian President Droupadi Murmu as the reviewing officer. Themed “United Through Oceans,” it served as a platform for global naval leaders to showcase maritime cooperation and diplomacy.
  • MILAN 2026 Naval Exercise: Running from February 19 to 26, the exercise includes over 20 nations, such as the United States, Australia, France, Japan, South Korea, Russia, and Vietnam.
  • Operational Drills: The BRP Miguel Malvar is participating in joint patrols, surface warfare exercises, tactical maneuvers, and Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Response (HADR) simulations in the Bay of Bengal.

Strategic Importance

Navy spokesperson Capt. Marissa Martinez emphasized that this mission aligns with the Navy’s Vision 2040 to become a modern, multi-domain, and self-reliant force. Analysts noted that “looking west” to the Indian Ocean is vital for the Philippines to secure sea lines of communication and protect the large population of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) in the region.

The deployment also highlights the deepening defense ties between Manila and New Delhi, following the Philippines’ landmark acquisition of the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile system from India.
