MILAN, ITALY — Speed skater Peter Joseph Proulx and alpine skier Asa Miller-Ceccarelli proudly carried the Philippine flag during the dazzling opening ceremony of the 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics on Friday night, February 6, 2026.

The Filipino duo led a small but determined delegation into the San Siro Stadium, marking the Philippines’ continued presence in the winter sports arena.

The Flag Bearers

  • Peter Joseph Proulx: Making his Olympic debut, Proulx is the first Filipino speed skater to qualify for the Winter Games. His qualification is seen as a major breakthrough for the Philippine Skating Union.
  • Asa Miller-Ceccarelli: A veteran of the slopes, Miller-Ceccarelli is competing in his third consecutive Winter Olympics. He represented the country in Pyeongchang (2018) and Beijing (2022) and remains the country’s top prospect in the slalom and giant slalom events.

The Philippine Delegation While the Philippines is a tropical nation, the 2026 contingent highlights the growing diversity of Filipino athletes competing globally.

  • Athletes: The team consists of Proulx, Miller-Ceccarelli, and figure skater Sofia Frank, who is scheduled to compete later in the Games.
  • Support System: The athletes were joined by Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) officials and coaches, all clad in barong-inspired winter gear that stood out during the traditional Parade of Nations.

Significance of Participation POC President Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino praised the athletes for their resilience, noting that qualifying for the Winter Olympics is an “extraordinary feat” for athletes from a country without natural snow. The government and private sponsors have increased support for winter sports in recent years, focusing on high-performance training camps in Europe and North America.

The Milan-Cortina Games, which are being held across several venues in Northern Italy, officially began following the lighting of the Olympic cauldron. For the Philippines, the focus now shifts to the competition floor, where Proulx and Miller-Ceccarelli hope to achieve personal bests and potentially secure the country’s highest-ever finish in a Winter Olympic event.
