Sunday Weather Alert: Shear Line to Bring Heavy Rains Over Southern Luzon and Visayas; ‘Amihan’ Persists in Metro Manila

MANILA, Philippines — The state weather bureau PAGASA has issued a heavy rainfall warning for Sunday, February 1, 2026, as a shear line continues to dump significant moisture over the eastern sections of Southern Luzon and the Visayas.

In its 5:00 a.m. bulletin, the bureau warned of rainfall totals between 50 to 100 millimeters in several provinces, potentially triggering flash floods and landslides.

Areas with Heavy Rainfall Warning:

  • Bicol Region: Catanduanes, Albay, Sorsogon, and Masbate.
  • Visayas: Samar, Northern Samar, and Eastern Samar.

Scattered Rains and Thunderstorms: The shear line will also bring cloudy skies and scattered rainshowers to the following areas:

  • The remainder of Visayas and the Bicol Region.
  • Quezon Province, Oriental Mindoro, Marinduque, and Romblon.

Northeast Monsoon (Amihan) Effects: While Southern Luzon and Visayas deal with the shear line, the Northeast Monsoon continues to influence the rest of Luzon:

  • Metro Manila & Rest of Luzon: Generally fair weather with isolated light rains.
  • Mimaropa & Mindanao: These regions may experience isolated rainshowers due to localized thunderstorms.

Cyclonic Activity Update: PAGASA confirmed that there are currently no low-pressure areas (LPAs) or tropical cyclones within or approaching the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR). However, the bureau previously noted that a new LPA could potentially form within the “monitoring domain” later next week.

Residents in the affected Bicol and Samar provinces are advised to stay alert for official warnings from local disaster risk reduction and management offices.
