From Waste to Wealth: Pagudpud Villagers Showcase Eco-Products at Ilocos Norte ‘Basura Summit’

LAOAG CITY, Ilocos Norte — Residents of Barangay Caparispisan in Pagudpud are transforming plastic waste and discarded tires into functional household items, proving that effective waste management can also serve as a sustainable source of income.

The community’s “trash-to-treasure” initiatives were a highlight of the Basura (Trash) Summit held on Friday, January 30, 2026, at the Ilocos Norte Centennial Arena.

Upcycling for a Purpose The coastal village workers showcased a diverse array of eco-friendly products made from materials that would otherwise end up in the sea or landfills:

  • Product Range: Items exhibited included tote bags woven from plastic sachets, plant holders, and even sofa sets crafted from used tires.
  • Economic Value: The products are sold at prices ranging from P50 to as much as P10,000, depending on the complexity of the design and the labor involved.
  • Environmental Impact: For a community living near the shore, the project has become a vital defense against plastic pollution, encouraging residents to view every sachet and bottle as a potential resource.

A Model for Solid Waste Management Governor Cecilia Araneta Marcos, who attended the summit, lauded the initiative as a benchmark for the province. She expressed hope that Caparispisan’s discipline and creativity would be replicated in other towns to bolster Ilocos Norte’s overall solid waste management program.

Community Discipline Barangay health workers Marlyn Madamba and Eileen Menor emphasized that the project has fostered a deeper sense of fulfillment and unity among the people. “Solid waste management starts with us. Segregate, recycle, and compost—simple actions that create big change,” Menor said.

The Ilocos Norte Environment and Natural Resources Office (ENRO) is now urging the public to support these local artisans by purchasing their durable and aesthetically unique eco-products. By turning environmental stewardship into a livelihood, the residents of Caparispisan are setting a provincial standard for “respecting nature through discipline” in 2026.
