AFP Ramps Up Malampaya Patrols After Discovery of New Gas Well

MANILA, Philippines — The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) has significantly intensified its maritime and aerial monitoring of the Malampaya gas complex following the announcement of a major new gas discovery that promises to extend the life of the country’s primary energy source.

The heightened security measures come amid simmering tensions in the West Philippine Sea and the detection of Chinese vessels in closer proximity to the critical infrastructure located northwest of Palawan.

The “Malampaya East-1” Discovery On January 19, 2026, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. officially announced the discovery of the Malampaya East-1 (MAE-1) well.

  • Capacity: The new field holds approximately 2.6 billion cubic meters (98 billion cubic feet) of gas.
  • Economic Impact: It is estimated to generate nearly 14 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually—enough to power 5.7 million households or 200,000 schools for a year.
  • Production Boost: The find will increase the remaining recoverable volumes of the existing field by an estimated 30 percent.

Military Readiness and Surveillance Following the discovery, AFP Chief of Staff Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr. conducted a site visit on Friday to assess the readiness of Joint Task Force (JTF) Malampaya.

  • Air and Sea Presence: Brawner flew over the drilling platform and briefed troops on updated interagency coordination and security measures designed to thwart any potential harassment.
  • Strategic Importance: Located just 80 kilometers from the Palawan mainland, the MAE-1 well is a “high-productivity resource” essential for national development and energy security.

The China Context While Malampaya’s operations have historically been less targeted than exploration activities in Recto Bank, the AFP remains vigilant. Analysts have noted a “show of force” in recent months:

  • “Monster Ship” Presence: In 2024 and 2025, the China Coast Guard’s largest vessel (CCG 5901) and other ships were monitored sailing as close as 65 km from El Nido, near the gas fields.
  • Navy Assurance: Philippine Navy spokesperson Capt. Marissa Arlene Martinez assured the public that special operations units have maintained a continuous presence in the area for over a decade to protect the submarine pipeline and platforms.

Consortium Partnership The successful discovery was led by the Service Contract-38 Consortium, headed by Prime Energy Resources Development BV, in partnership with UC-38, PNOC Exploration Corp., and Prime Oil and Gas Inc. This new well represents the first natural gas discovery in Philippine territory in over a decade, providing a vital lifeline as the original reserves were nearing depletion.
