Scientists Discover New Ant Species in Eastern Philippines

Researchers have identified a previously unknown ant species in the eastern Philippines, officially named Strumigenys silangan.

This ant is notable for its unique features: it has only four antenna segments, simple hairs on its head, and a smooth area on its abdomen. Such a combination is extremely rare, with only a few species in the Strumigenys genus exhibiting four-segmented antennae.

The specimens were collected from several locations in eastern Philippines, including Mount Isarog, Polillo Island, and Samar Island. Scientists say this discovery highlights the rich biodiversity of the region and emphasizes the ecological importance of even the smallest insect species.
