Authorities have identified Zamboanga City and General Santos City as major entry points and distribution centers for smuggled cigarettes in the Philippines. Large-scale seizures highlight the extent of the illicit tobacco trade in these regions.
In Zamboanga City, authorities destroyed over ₱595 million worth of contraband cigarettes, while in General Santos City, enforcement actions targeted establishments selling undocumented products, including seizures exceeding ₱650,000.
Experts note that these areas are attractive to smugglers due to strategic ports, complex maritime geography, and porous checkpoints. The illicit trade reduces government revenue, undermines legitimate producers, and poses public health risks, as unregulated products reach consumers.
