Senate President Sotto: “No Senator May Be Arrested Within Senate Grounds”

Senate President Vicente ‘Tito’ Sotto III has reaffirmed the institution’s policy that no sitting senator shall be arrested within the premises of the Senate of the Philippines, citing the need to preserve the dignity of the chamber and maintain institutional courtesy. He noted that while the Senate upholds its own tradition internally, law‑enforcement actions outside the Senate grounds fall beyond its purview.

The remark comes amid reports alleging that the International Criminal Court (ICC) may have issued a warrant for the arrest of Ronald ‘Bato’ Dela Rosa. Sotto clarified he is not personally aware of any formal warrant being issued and emphasised that the Senate’s protection applies only within its physical boundaries—not beyond them.
