Cagayan de Oro Mayor Orders Swift Road-Clearing After Landslide in Upland Village

In Cagayan de Oro City (CDO), local officials launched an urgent operation after a landslide struck a hillside village, blocking a critical access road and disrupting travel for residents. Rolan Rocha, the city mayor, directed the public works department to clear debris and restore safe passage as quickly as possible.

The incident happened early in the morning, catching residents off guard. Although no serious injuries were reported, the blockage severed access to and from the village for a number of households—posing risks not just for mobility but also for emergency response, supplies, and daily livelihood.

Mayor Rocha stated that the landslide underscores the city’s vulnerability to weather-related hazards, especially in its upland barangays. He committed to reinforcing monitoring of potential risk zones, improving drainage and slope-stabilization measures, and increasing community preparedness. Residents of the affected village have been advised to remain vigilant, avoid the unstable area, and comply with any evacuation orders or safety advisories.

The city government is coordinating with the regional disaster risk reduction office to survey the surrounding slopes, assess for further instability, and develop a longer-term mitigation plan. “We must act now to prevent something similar from happening again,” the mayor emphasized, noting that restoring the road is only the first step.
