A tanker truck carrying gasoline overturned and exploded on Tuesday in the Bida area of Niger State in north-central Nigeria, leaving at least 31 people dead and 17 injured, according to police.
The explosion occurred when residents rushed to the scene of the spill and attempted to collect leaking fuel. Police spokesman Wasiu Abiodun said those nearby were caught in the blast almost immediately after the leak.
Authorities say the incident highlights persistent safety issues: heavy‐duty truck accidents are rising in Niger State, fueled by poor road conditions and the lack of a functional rail freight system. The state serves as a major transit hub between Nigeria’s north and south.
Governor Umaru Bago expressed his sorrow and criticised the dangerous practice of gathering fuel from overturned tankers despite repeated warnings of the risks.
