Tragedy struck General Santos City after a newborn girl was discovered lifeless in an irrigation canal in Barangay Katanggawan.
Residents spotted the infant’s body submerged in water and immediately alerted authorities. Based on findings by Scene of the Crime Operatives (SOCO), the baby may have been in the canal for approximately five hours before being found.
Witnesses noted that the baby still had her umbilical cord attached at the time of discovery.
General Santos Police Station 8 Commander Major Robert Forres said efforts are underway to identify the mother, who may face charges of infanticide. “We’ve returned to the scene and are working closely to locate possible witnesses and the mother responsible for this heartbreaking act,” he said.
Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward to assist in the investigation.
