Despite Courtesy Resignation, Sonny Angara Stays Active as DepEd Chief Ahead of School Opening

Education Secretary Sonny Angara continues to actively lead the Department of Education (DepEd) as preparations ramp up for the June 16 opening of classes, even after submitting his courtesy resignation.

DepEd spokesperson Dennis Legaspi confirmed on Friday that Angara remains fully engaged in his role, ensuring all programs and initiatives move forward smoothly. “Our preparations are in full swing for the upcoming school year,” Legaspi stated.

Angara is also set to accompany President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to Laoag, Ilocos Norte, on Saturday for the opening of the annual Palarong Pambansa.

When asked if DepEd’s programs would proceed amid the uncertainty surrounding his post, Legaspi affirmed that all operations are continuing as normal since Malacañang has not yet acted on Angara’s resignation.

The courtesy resignations from Cabinet members were requested by the President on Thursday, following his administration’s call for a refreshed mandate.

For now, DepEd is focused on ensuring the smooth start of the school year and pushing forward with reforms, including the swift hiring of 16,000 new teachers and improved literacy-centered education strategies.
