Filipino Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle has been appointed to help organize the preparations for the papal conclave following the death of Pope Francis, according to the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP).
As reported by CBCP News, Tagle, alongside German Cardinal Reinhard Marx and French Cardinal Dominique Mamberti, was elected to assist Camerlengo Cardinal Kevin Farrell. Marx will also serve as coordinator of the Vatican’s Council for the Economy.
Tagle, who currently serves as pro-prefect of the Dicastery for Evangelization, will help oversee the transitional period leading up to the conclave, scheduled to commence on May 7, 2025.
The three cardinals were selected to join the Particular Congregation, a body responsible for specific preparatory tasks during the sede vacante (the period when the papal seat is vacant). Their selection was finalized during the fifth General Congregation of cardinals on April 28.
The CBCP explained that major decisions during the sede vacante are handled by the General Congregation, while the Particular Congregation, composed of the Camerlengo and three rotating cardinals, manages other matters. New members are elected every three days as outlined in the Apostolic Constitution Universi Dominici Gregis.
Two other Filipino cardinals — Manila Archbishop Jose Cardinal Advincula and Kalookan Bishop Pablo Virgilio Cardinal David — are also eligible to vote in the upcoming papal election.
Pope Francis passed away on April 21 at age 88 due to complications from a stroke and heart failure, following a prolonged hospitalization for double pneumonia.
