BATANGAS, Philippines – The man who rode a motorcycle inside the historic Taal Basilica and parked it in front of the altar has spoken out, claiming his actions stemmed from a desire for spiritual blessing and a fresh start.
“I just wanted to be blessed. That’s all I wanted. It’s up to others how they view me. I just want to turn my life around,” he said in detention, as reported by Bam Alegre on 24 Oras.
A now-viral video shows the rider entering the church, parking near the altar, sitting on the priest’s chair, clapping, and placing a foot on it. His female companion is seen walking away in the footage.
Concerned locals turned the man over to police. According to Taal Police Chief Capt. Ronald Magno, the rider’s parents claimed he had no vices. However, the suspect admitted to using marijuana, which he allegedly bought online. He has also been asking for cigarettes from fellow detainees.
The man now faces charges under Article 133 of the Revised Penal Code for offending religious feelings, a criminal offense in the Philippines.
