Duterte Urges Supporters: Avoid Discussing ICC Case, Respect Court Protocols

Former President Rodrigo Duterte has requested his supporters to avoid commenting on his ongoing case at the International Criminal Court (ICC), where he faces charges of crimes against humanity over his administration’s war on drugs.

Speaking on Duterte’s behalf during a gathering in The Hague to mark his 80th birthday, Vice President Sara Duterte relayed his message: express support or emotions, but avoid discussing the case or the complainants.

“He asked that we refrain from discussing the case, especially anything related to the complaints or those involved in the ICC proceedings,” she said.

Duterte also urged his followers to back all 10 PDP-Laban Senate candidates, as he can no longer personally campaign due to his detention.

Respect ICC Protocols

Sara Duterte also reminded the media and supporters to follow the ICC’s guidelines, which prohibit filming or photographing the detention center and individuals entering or leaving the facility.

“The ICC has been cooperative and respectful in allowing supporters to express their sentiments. Let’s respect their rules in return,” she emphasized.

Legal Team and Visits

Sara confirmed that Duterte’s partner, Honeylet Avanceña, and daughter Veronica were finally able to visit him after previous failed attempts. She also shared that the legal team is expanding, with two ICC-accredited lawyers on board and additional recruitment ongoing.

On a potential interim release, she said discussions are underway but deferred to the legal team for further details.

Duterte’s next ICC appearance is set for September 23, 2025, for the confirmation of charges hearing.
