MANILA, Philippines – Malacañang has issued a warning against the improper use of the EDSA Busway, emphasizing that emergency access should not be abused following reports of senior police officials using the lane for a closed-door meeting.
At a press briefing, Palace Press Officer Undersecretary Claire Castro clarified that while police officers on duty and responding to emergencies are permitted to use the EDSA Busway, they must ensure their use is justified.
“This shouldn’t be abused by simply using the word ’emergency,'” Castro stated. She also stressed that police officials should plan their schedules accordingly to avoid unnecessary use of the exclusive lane.
Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla has vowed to ask PNP Chief Rommel Marbil for an explanation, as concerns grow over possible misuse. Meanwhile, PNP spokesperson Police Brigadier General Jean Fajardo defended the convoy involved, stating that officers are allowed access in emergency situations.
The issue surfaced after plate numbers of the vehicles in the convoy were shared online, prompting security concerns.
