Pope Francis, 88, remains under medical care at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital as he receives treatment for bronchitis, the Vatican confirmed. As a result, he will not be leading his usual Sunday Angelus prayer with pilgrims.
Doctors have advised the pontiff to rest completely, with his treatment being slightly adjusted based on new microbiological findings. However, Vatican officials reassured the public that his condition is improving, with no fever recorded on Saturday.
Health Concerns and Hospitalization History
Pope Francis has struggled with respiratory issues since December, often relying on aides to read his speeches at public events. Having lost part of a lung due to pleurisy in his youth, he remains susceptible to lung infections.
This is his second hospitalization in less than two years—he previously spent nine days at Gemelli in June 2023 following abdominal hernia surgery.
Prayers for the Pontiff
Outside the hospital, groups of well-wishers gathered to pray, hoping for his swift recovery.
The Vatican has not provided an exact date for his discharge, stating that he will remain in the hospital as long as necessary.
