Janno Gibbs Defends VMX Amid Jinggoy Estrada’s Criticism of Platform Content

Janno Gibbs has spoken out in defense of VMX, formerly known as Vivamax, following Senate President Pro Tempore Jinggoy Estrada’s condemnation of the platform for allegedly promoting explicit content and exploiting its actors.

Estrada criticized VMX during a December 2024 privilege speech, accusing the subscription-based service of “normalizing porn” and prioritizing profit over social responsibility.

“Are we normalizing porn on streaming platforms now?” Estrada asked. “The Philippines is a nation deeply rooted in moral values, family traditions, and respect for human dignity. These principles are being challenged by platforms that prioritize profit.”

Gibbs: VMX is a Private Platform

At a press event for his upcoming VMX gag show Wow Mani, Gibbs addressed Estrada’s remarks.

“Senator Jinggoy is doing his job. He has all the right to his opinions,” Gibbs said. “But personally, VMX is not a public viewing venue. It’s private. You need to pay. It has a child lock, and you need a card to access it.”

Gibbs also pointed out that VMX content is similar to what can be found on international platforms like Netflix.

“There is nothing on VMX you cannot see on Netflix. Sometimes Netflix has more vulgar content. VMX gave these girls opportunities they couldn’t get in mainstream media. For many, it’s a great stepping stone,” he said.

MTRCB’s Stance

The Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) admitted it lacks the authority to regulate content on streaming platforms. Chairperson Diorella “Lala” Sotto-Antonio stated that online curated content “doesn’t fall under its mandate.”

Estrada, however, noted that the platform had previously agreed to self-regulate following complaints about its explicit content. “It seems that VMX is not complying with this agreement, as MTRCB monitoring revealed movies that are only suitable for porn sites,” Estrada said.

Industry Impact

Gibbs praised VMX for employing respected directors and writers and providing job opportunities.

“VMX offers quality content and has provided work for many in the industry,” he added.

As the debate continues, VMX remains one of the largest Filipino streaming platforms, with over 12 million subscribers as of December 2024.
