The Pasig Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 159 has denied the request of Apollo Quiboloy, founder of the Kingdom of Jesus Christ (KOJC), to attend a live television interview related to his candidacy for senator in the upcoming elections.
Court’s Decision
In its three-page order dated January 13, 2025, the court highlighted the potential risks of Quiboloy making public statements during the interview, which could influence public perception of his ongoing legal proceedings.
“While the Court recognizes accused Quiboloy’s right to seek public office and campaign, this right is not absolute and remains subject to court regulation,” the order stated.
The court also pointed out that Quiboloy has other means to communicate his platform to the public aside from the interview.
Motion Lacking Substantiation
Quiboloy’s motion sought permission to attend a live interview organized by ABS-CBN News Channel on January 14. However, the court noted that his motion did not include a formal invitation from the TV network, preventing it from setting proper guidelines.
“For failure to substantiate his motion and to ensure the fairness and confidentiality of the trial, the Court exercises its discretion in denying the request,” it said.
Legal Troubles
Quiboloy is facing a non-bailable charge of qualified human trafficking under Section 4(a) of Republic Act No. 9208, as amended, and additional charges under Sections 5(b) and 10(a) of Republic Act 7610, the Special Protection of Children Against Abuse, Exploitation, and Discrimination Act. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
GMA News has reached out to Quiboloy’s camp for comment but has not received a response as of posting.
