Arjo Atayde Redefines the Action Star in MMFF Film Topakk

Arjo Atayde takes on a nuanced portrayal of an action star in Topakk, the 2024 Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) entry directed by Richard Somes. Playing Miguel Vergara, an ex-special forces operative grappling with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), Atayde delivers a performance that sheds light on the internal struggles of a traditionally stoic archetype.

The film also stars Julia Montes as Weng Diwata and Kokoy de Santos as Bogs Diwata, who are caught in a perilous chase by law enforcement connected to a drug cartel.

Redefining Action

Unlike many action films, Topakk delves into its lead character’s psychological struggles. When asked about breaking new ground as an action star, Atayde said:

“Every role, I just try my best. I don’t want to prove anything. I just want to tell a good story. I’ve been doing action for a long time, but in Topakk, we did things that haven’t been done.”

Atayde also expressed his appreciation for being part of MMFF’s 50th edition, noting the festival’s diverse slate of films.

“This MMFF is very diverse, with different emotions and messages. To be part of it is such a privilege. We’re all storytellers at the end of the day.”

Topakk Takes Home Awards

Topakk garnered significant recognition at the Gabi ng Parangal, including the Fernando Poe Jr. Memorial Award for Excellence, Best Float, and a Special Jury Prize. Atayde expressed gratitude for the accolades:

“May we give all genres a reason to come back to the Metro Manila Film Festival. It’s like a big reunion, and I’m very much privileged to be onstage.”

Director Richard Somes also celebrated the wins, emphasizing the resurgence of Filipino action films:

“Mabuhay ang action sa pelikulang Pilipino (Long live the action genre in Filipino films).”
