Bangkok – A tragic fire at the six-story Ember Hotel near Bangkok’s Khao San backpacker district claimed the lives of three foreign tourists and injured seven others on Sunday night.
Authorities identified the victims as a Brazilian woman who died at the scene and two men, an American and a Ukrainian, who succumbed to injuries at the hospital.
Fire and Rescue Response
The fire broke out on the fifth floor of the hotel, which housed 75 people at the time of the incident. Bangkok’s Fire and Rescue Department reported that 34 individuals were rescued from the rooftop during the emergency.
“Authorities reacted quickly, and the fire alarm sounded, but the smoke was fast,” Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt said.
City-Wide Safety Measures Ordered
In response to the incident, Governor Chadchart ordered an inspection of fire escape routes in hotels and entertainment venues across the city.
“We have to build confidence and take care of tourists,” Chadchart emphasized.
Tourism Impact
Tourism is a vital sector for Thailand, Southeast Asia’s second-largest economy. From January 1 to December 1, the country welcomed 32 million foreign tourists, marking a 28% increase from the previous year. In 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic, nearly 40 million visitors flocked to Thailand.
As investigations into the fire’s cause continue, authorities are focusing on ensuring the safety of tourists and maintaining Thailand’s reputation as a global travel destination.
