Francis Lopez Redeems Himself, Leads UP to UAAP Basketball Title

Sophomore standout Francis Lopez rose to the occasion, helping the University of the Philippines (UP) Fighting Maroons secure the UAAP Season 87 men’s basketball championship with a hard-fought 66-62 victory over De La Salle University in Game 3 of the finals at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on Sunday.

Redemption After Game 2 Missteps

Lopez faced criticism after Game 2, where missed free throws and a costly turnover contributed to UP’s loss, allowing La Salle to force a deciding Game 3. However, his teammates’ unwavering support empowered him to bounce back and deliver under pressure.

“They still trusted me,” Lopez said in a post-game interview. “Even after that loss, we were able to talk and stay united. They kept believing in me, and I’m just really happy to have redeemed myself.”

Lopez recorded a double-double in Game 3 with 12 points, 11 rebounds, and six assists, including a crucial three-pointer late in the game that sealed UP’s second title in four seasons.

Blocking Out the Noise

Despite the outside criticism, Lopez remained focused on his team and their collective goal.

“Like I said, I don’t care about what they say. I’m not here to please anybody from the outside,” Lopez said, expressing his dedication to the Fighting Maroons. “What I care about is the team, what’s inside of us, and I’m just really happy we got this win. I can finally say that I’m officially a champion.”

Gratitude and Triumph

Lopez also thanked the UP community for their unwavering support throughout the season.

“All the hard work, all the support, especially from the UP community—thank you so much. We really worked hard for this one. I’m really happy about it,” he shared.

The Fighting Maroons’ victory not only highlights the team’s resilience but also underscores Lopez’s ability to rise above adversity and deliver when it matters most.
