Gary Valenciano on Sofronio Vasquez: “A True Champion”

Renowned Filipino artist Gary Valenciano has praised Sofronio Vasquez, the newly crowned winner of “The Voice US” Season 26, for his remarkable journey from being a contestant on “Tawag ng Tanghalan” (TNT) to achieving international acclaim.

The Rise of a Champion

Valenciano, who served as a judge on TNT in 2019, recognized Vasquez’s growth and resilience, describing him as the embodiment of a “true champion.” Despite finishing as third runner-up on TNT, Vasquez used the experience as a stepping stone to greater heights.

“When I say I’m proud of him, it feels like an understatement. Sofronio reflects the countless individuals who have faced both victories and losses,” Valenciano said.

He highlighted the distinction between a singer and a vocalist, emphasizing that Vasquez has evolved into the latter—a storyteller who conveys emotion through his music.
“Losing is part of what makes a true winner. Sofronio is proof of that,” Valenciano added.

Growth Through Hardships

Valenciano noted how Vasquez’s performances have matured since his TNT days, attributing this to the artist’s life experiences.
“He’s grown so much over the years. The ups and downs have completed him, and from here, things can only get better,” Valenciano remarked.

Impact on OPM

When asked about Vasquez’s influence on Original Pilipino Music (OPM), Valenciano described the artist’s success as a testament to the value of hard work.
“Sofronio represents OPM in a way because he’s Pinoy. But the structure of music has changed. Today, it’s about creating something meaningful and letting people connect with it,” he said.

Valenciano also highlighted Vasquez’s journey as an inspiring example of overcoming struggles to achieve success.
“There’s no guarantee you’ll reach your dreams, but Sofronio took the risk and believed in himself. That’s what makes his story so heartwarming,” he said.

Sofronio’s Journey

Raised in Misamis Oriental and now based in Utica, New York, Vasquez initially planned to pursue dentistry. However, his passion for music reignited after moving to the US, eventually leading him to the international stage.

Celebrating Success

Meanwhile, TNT alum Sam Mangubat defended “It’s Showtime” from criticism over Vasquez not winning the TNT title.
“People should stop blaming the show. Sofronio was already talented then, but he’s even more seasoned now. Let’s celebrate his victory instead of spreading negativity,” Mangubat said.

Mangubat, TNT Season 1’s first runner-up, emphasized that various factors, including text votes, influence competition outcomes.

As Vasquez basks in his newfound success, his journey continues to inspire aspiring artists to persevere and embrace their unique stories.
