Senator Bong Go has filed Senate Resolution No. 1217, calling for an inquiry into the Duterte administration’s controversial campaign against illegal drugs. The resolution, filed on Thursday, directs the Senate Committee on Public Order and Dangerous Drugs to conduct an investigation aimed at improving legislation related to the drug war.
Go emphasized that the primary goal of the inquiry is to evaluate the campaign’s execution to create more comprehensive policies addressing the drug problem in the country. He highlighted the positive impact of the Duterte administration’s strong stance on illegal drugs, noting that many Filipinos felt safer as criminals were pursued aggressively.
“Mas ligtas silang umuuwi sa kanilang mga pamilya,” Go said, underscoring the safety and peace of mind that the campaign allegedly provided to the public. However, Go acknowledged the numerous accusations regarding human rights violations and potential abuses of power linked to the drug war, stressing the importance of uncovering the truth.
Aside from reviewing the campaign, Go’s resolution also aims to introduce improvements to prevent future legal violations, strengthen law enforcement, expand drug rehabilitation centers, and institutionalize Anti-Drug Abuse Councils across the country.
Go reiterated that any efforts to protect Filipinos from the drug menace should comply with the law, quoting former President Duterte’s directive to law enforcement to protect lives while adhering to legal standards.
The resolution comes amidst continued debates over the long-term effects of the drug war and its human rights implications.
