China has launched a new round of military drills around Taiwan, citing a need to counter “separatist acts” following Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te’s recent National Day speech. The Eastern Theatre Command announced the “Joint Sword-2024B” exercises, which involve maneuvers in the Taiwan Strait and areas surrounding the island, including simulated blockades of Taiwanese ports and military operations involving aircraft and warships. Beijing stated the exercises are essential for safeguarding China’s sovereignty.
In response, Taiwan condemned the drills as provocations undermining regional stability. President Lai has reiterated Taiwan’s commitment to democracy and its desire for peaceful relations, a message echoed by Washington. U.S. officials urged China to show restraint, noting there was no justification for the drills given Lai’s routine address.
China has intensified its military presence around Taiwan, with the PLA releasing statements suggesting it is “prepared for battle” as tensions continue to escalate. Taiwan remains vigilant, monitoring the situation while reassuring the public and bolstering its defense posture.
