Olympic gold medalist Carlos Yulo, who trained at Teikyo University in Japan under Coach Munehiro Kugimiya from 2016 to 2023, reflected on the lessons he learned during his time there. Beyond improving his gymnastics skills, Yulo emphasized the importance of dedication and perseverance—qualities he aims to pass on to future gymnasts.
“Dedication to work and never giving up on your dreams are crucial,” Yulo said during a recent interview. He added, “When you commit your time, energy, and heart, even if you don’t reach your original dream, you’ll achieve something greater—you’ll discover more about yourself along the way and learn to value the people who help you on your journey.”
These are lessons Yulo learned from his former coach and hopes to instill in the next generation of gymnasts. Yulo also shared that he plans to visit Japan soon to thank those who supported him during his journey.
The Filipino gymnast was recently honored by Japan’s Ambassador to the Philippines, Endo Kazuya, for his outstanding achievements in the 2024 Paris Olympics, where he secured two gold medals. The ambassador expressed Japan’s pride in helping shape Yulo into one of the finest athletes in the sport.
