A collision occurred between a China Coast Guard (CCG) vessel and a Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) ship near Escoda Shoal in the West Philippine Sea on Monday, according to a statement by a Chinese official. The incident was reported by CCG spokesperson Gan Yu, who accused the Philippine vessels BRP Bagacay and BRP Cape Engaño of “illegally entering” the area without China’s permission.
Gan alleged that the BRP Bagacay “deliberately” collided with a CCG vessel despite repeated warnings. The CCG reportedly took “control measures” against the Philippine vessels, which may have involved the use of water cannons, according to monitoring by former US Air Force official Ray Powell.
The CCG blamed the Philippines for the collision, warning of potential consequences if the alleged provocations continue. Escoda Shoal, located within the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone (EEZ), has been a point of contention, with the BRP Teresa Magbanua stationed there since April amid reports of Chinese reclamation activities.
Tensions remain high in the South China Sea, despite international rulings in favor of the Philippines, which China does not recognize.
