With the Paris 2024 Olympics just 100 days away, the mood among Parisians is less than festive. Many locals see the upcoming games as a potential disruption rather than an occasion for excitement. Amid ongoing city renovations and heightened security measures, the sentiment in the city is tinged with apprehension rather than anticipation.
A recent poll indicates that only a little over one-third of French residents are enthusiastic about the Olympics, which are set to commence on July 26. As the event draws nearer, the inconvenience of construction and the expected influx of visitors are prompting some residents to plan escapes from the city or to opt for remote work to avoid the chaos.
Carole Gabriel-Jullien, a 57-year-old consulting director, expressed her disinterest and concern about the games, planning to work from home to steer clear of the disruptions. “Am I excited about the Games? No, sorry, I’m not excited at all,” she stated, reflecting a common sentiment among the locals.
On the other hand, not everyone is looking to escape. Jacques Etoundi, a 55-year-old logistics worker, is genuinely excited about the Olympics being hosted in France. “It’s a chance for us to have the Games in France. We’re happy,” he shared, highlighting the positive outlook of some residents who look forward to showcasing their city to the world.
The organizers remain optimistic, hoping that the public mood will shift more favorably as the event approaches. However, concerns about readiness, security, and the impact on daily life continue to loom large for many Parisians.
