U.S. Denounces China’s Aggressive Maneuvers in the South China Sea

The U.S. has expressed strong condemnation of China’s aggressive actions in the South China Sea following an incident involving Chinese forces and the Philippines. The event, which took place on March 23, saw Chinese ships using water cannons and engaging in perilous blocking tactics against a Philippine resupply vessel near the Ayungin Shoal, causing injuries and damage.

The U.S. State Department, voicing solidarity with its ally, the Philippines, criticized these actions as undermining lawful maritime operations and high seas freedom of navigation. This confrontation led to significant impairment of the Philippine vessel, obstructing normal personnel rotations and supply deliveries to Filipino service members stationed at Second Thomas Shoal.

The National Task Force for the West Philippine Sea (NTF-WPS) also condemned the China Coast Guard’s actions, highlighting the resultant injuries and vessel damage. The U.S. criticized these actions as not only destabilizing for the region but also as a blatant disregard for international law.

Referencing the 2016 international tribunal decision, the U.S. emphasized that the actions of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) violate legally binding resolutions that define the maritime territories, urging China to respect these rulings. Furthermore, the U.S. reiterated its commitment to the Philippines under the 1951 U.S.-Philippines Mutual Defense Treaty, affirming that it covers armed attacks in the South China Sea, including those on Philippine military and coast guard vessels.

This development underscores the escalating tensions in the region and the international community’s call for adherence to lawful maritime conduct.
