The St. John Bosco Parish in Tondo, Manila, has presented a Senakulo for 2024 that captivates with its cinematic quality and thoughtful message. This passion play, crafted meticulously by over twenty youths, merges the story of Jesus with contemporary themes, aiming to resonate with a wider audience and deliver a powerful message of life and sacrifice.
Under the direction of Dondie Bernardino, preparation for this ambitious project began in September 2023, integrating historical and current events to refresh the traditional narrative and prevent audience fatigue. The play intricately weaves the tales of devotion and miracles associated with the Black Nazarene, adding authenticity and depth to the presentation.
Despite the young cast’s busy schedules with work and studies, they dedicated their time to this spiritual endeavor, viewing it as an opportunity to give back to God for His blessings and guidance. Mary Faith Garrate, a participant in the Senakulo 2024, expressed the deep fulfillment derived from being part of this religious play, emphasizing its impact on both the performers and audience in fostering a closer relationship with the Lord.
Rick Payumo, who has portrayed Jesus in previous local enactments, undertook the role in this year’s Senakulo, embracing the significant responsibility with faith and devotion.
Fr. Gaudencio Carandang Jr., SDB, the Parish Priest/Rector, emphasized the Senakulo’s message: the constant presence of God in all life’s circumstances. The play encourages reflection on one’s steadfastness in faith during both good and challenging times.
The Senakulo 2024 is accessible for viewing on the St. John Bosco Parish-Tondo’s social media pages and will be performed live on Good Friday, offering a spiritually enriching experience for the community.
